Despite the difficulty of establishing a career in the United States, major law firms are happy to hire Australian lawyers. While scores of foreign attorneys enroll in LLM programs in American law schools, most do not get a job with one. They take bar exams and go back to their home countries. Australian attorneys, on the other hand, do very well in major New York law firms.

Association of Asian Australian Lawyers (AALA)

The Association of Asian Australian Lawyers (AALA), founded in 2013, is Australia’s first incorporated association promoting the interests of Asian Australian lawyers. The Association is a non-profit organization, and membership is open to lawyers of any background. It is an important voice in the legal profession and works closely with other peak bodies to promote intersectional diversity and inclusion.

During his tenure as National President of the Association of Asian Australian Lawyers, Tuanh worked with key stakeholders to ensure greater cultural diversity in Australia’s legal profession. He spoke at a conference on promoting diversity in law.

Association of Hellenic Australian Lawyers (HAL)

The Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association (HAL) is a national professional association that offers a forum for Hellenic lawyers to network and exchange ideas. The organization is committed to promoting cultural harmony and diversity and advancing the legal profession. In addition, it holds regular events to celebrate Hellenism. Hellenic Australian lawyers can join the HAL by paying an annual fee of $50 for three years, or $20 for associate membership.

The association was founded by Andrew Panna SC and Maria Barbayannis. In less than six months, the group grew from 20 members to more than two hundred. Members are drawn from various areas across Australia, including South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland. The association has held three functions so far and has generated much interest among Hellenic Australian lawyers.

Legal practice of foreign law in Australia

If you have a practicing certificate from a foreign country, you can apply for a limited license to practise foreign law in Australia. These certificates allow foreign lawyers to appear before arbitration panels or bodies other than courts. The legal practice of foreign law in Australia is governed by the Legal Profession Uniform Law (WA). To be registered, you must provide an original, signed application to the Legal Profession Authority.

In order to practice law in Australia, a foreign lawyer must first obtain a law degree in Australia. Applicants must then apply to the Australian Legal Admissions Board for admission to practice law. To be admitted to the bar, foreign lawyers are required to complete additional academic studies in Australia, such as Federal and State Constitutional Law and Administrative Law.
